Garter snakes are often kept as pets, they are relatively harmless, although some species do possess a mild neurotoxic venom. However, it is not dangerous to humans
While most species are classified as harmless (non-venomous), their bite can cause minor swelling or itching in humans, and anyone bitten by a garter snake should clean the bite thoroughly. It is not ultimately a cause for concern. Allergic reactions to the saliva have been known, but cases are extremely rare.
They mostly eat toads, frogs, slugs, and worms, also they will eat almost anything that they can overpower

THE DANGERS OF GARDEN GRASS SNAKES
Garden grass snakes also known as GARTER snakes (Thamnophissirtalis) can be dangerous;
Yes, green snakes, not rattlesnakes, here's why:
A just wedded couple in Lagos (the Phillips) had a lot of potted plants.
During a recent cold spell, the wife was bringing a lot of them indoors (the plants) to protect them from a possible freeze. It turned out that a little green garden snake is hidden in one of the plants.
She brought in all of the plants and when it (the snake) had warmed up a bit, it slithered out and the wife saw it go under the sofa.
She let out a very loud scream, her husband (who was taking a shower) ran into the living room naked to see what the problem was. She told him there was a snake under the sofa.
He got down on the floor on his hands and knees to look for it.
About that time the family dog (bully rot) came and cold-nosed him from behind. He thought the snake had bitten him, so he screamed and fell over the floor.
His wife thought he had a heart attack, so she covered him up, told him to lie still and called an ambulance.
The attendants rushed in, would not listen to his protest, loaded him on the stretcher and started carrying him out.
About that time the snake came out from under the sofa and the emergency medical technician saw it and dropped his end of the stretcher, that is when the man (husband) broke his leg.
While he was still at the hospital the wife still had the problem of the snake in the house so she decided to call Mr. Martin (a neighbour) who volunteered to capture the snake.
He armed himself with a roll-up newspaper and began poking under the couch. Soon he decided it was gone and told the woman that the snake is gone; she later sat on the sofa in relief but while relaxing, her hand dangled in between the cushions, where she felt the snake wriggling around.
She screamed and fainted, the snake rushed back, Mr. Martin saw her lying there passed out tries to use CPR to revive her.
Right about that time Mrs. Martin returned from shopping (at SHOPRITE store) saw her husband's mouth on the woman's mouth, so she slammed her husband in the back of the head with a bag which contains canned goods, knocking him out and cutting his scalp to a point where it needed stitches.
The noise woke Mrs. Phillips from her dead faint and saw her neighbour (Mr. Martin) lying on the floor with his wife bending over him so she assumed the snake had bitten him and so he fell on the bag of canned goods and injured himself, she went to the kitchen and got a small bottle of whisky and began pouring it down his throat (to keep him warm).
By now the police arrived..................
FREEZE.........
They saw the unconscious man, smelled the whisky and assumed a DRUNKEN fight had occurred, they were about to arrest them when Mr. Phillips tried to explain how it all happened over the little green snake.
The police called an ambulance which took away the injured neighbour and his sobbing wife.
Now the little green snake crawled out under the sofa and one of the policemen (the fair complexioned) drew his gun and fired at it but he missed the snake and hit the leg of the end table.
The table fell over, the lamp on the table shattered and the bulb broke, it started a fire in the drapes.
The other policeman tried to beat out the flames in the process he fell through the window into the yard on top of the family dog's kennel which startled, jumped out of the compound and raced into the street where an oncoming car swerved to avoid it, so the car bashed the parked police car from behind, the police car moved up-front and hit a street light which fell and club a bakery bus vault which has a large cake in it so the cake got damaged.
Meanwhile the other neighbours (The Sleighs) saw the burning drapes and called in fire department.
The firemen had started raising their fire ladder when they were halfway down the street, the raising ladder tore out the overhead wires, put out the power and also disconnected the telephone lines (but they did put the fire out).
Time passed, both men were discharged from the hospital, the house repaired, the dog came home, the police acquired a new car, the security street light was replaced, the bakery van refurbished, another cake was made for the already wedded that is the Sleighs, the dog's kennel reconditioned, the electric cable fixed, the telephone cable fixed too and all was right with their world again....................
WATCH OUT FOR THE CONCLUDING PART
PREVIEW.........
And while watching the TV the weatherman announced a cold snap for that night, the husband at work picked up the phone to tell the wife about the weather condition for the night, so she won't take in the plants for the night....
“Darling he said”, meanwhile the telephone lines were connected wrongly Mr Sleigh picked the phone he responded hi, and he heard again “sweetheart please don't bring in the flowers tonight so the snake won't find us in bed”...
Then Mr. Sleigh he asked his wife if she still wanted to party that night as she had planned, she responded “NOTHIN GONNA STOP ME” my dear
Mr Jones left office, went home then reaches for his cutlass since he could recognise Mr Phillips voice....
What about the snake?.....
